Managing multi‐species plant invasions when interactions influence their impact

نویسندگان

چکیده

Invasions by multiple non-native plant species are common, but management programs often prioritize control of individual that expected to have the highest impacts. Multi-species invasions could larger or smaller impacts than single-species depending on how co-occurring invaders interact alter their abundance per capita Synergistic interactions, such as facilitation, may lead greater combined However, if focuses a single invader, suppressive interactions produce unintended consequences, release invader with stronger impact. The mechanisms described here highlight where better evidence is needed predict and which mitigation strategies most effective. Focused research required provide evidence, can aid managers in prioritizing target determining best sequence removal – one minimizes detrimental communities ecosystems.

Biotic interactions and plant invasions.

Introduced plant populations lose interactions with enemies, mutualists and competitors from their native ranges, and gain interactions with new species, under new abiotic conditions. From a biogeographical perspective, differences in the assemblage of interacting species, as well as in abiotic conditions, may explain the demographic success of the introduced plant populations relative to consp...

Convergence in Multispecies Interactions.

The concepts of convergent evolution and community convergence highlight how selective pressures can shape unrelated organisms or communities in similar ways. We propose a related concept, convergent interactions, to describe the independent evolution of multispecies interactions with similar physiological or ecological functions. A focus on convergent interactions clarifies how natural selecti...

Synergistic Interactions in Multispecies Biofilms

Multispecies biofilms are predominant in almost all natural environments, where myriads of resident microorganisms interact with each other in both synergistic and antagonistic manners. The interspecies interactions among different bacteria are, despite the ubiquity of these communities, still poorly understood. Here, we report a rapid, reproducible and sensitive approach for quantitative scree...

Exploiting Allee effects for managing biological invasions.

Biological invasions are a global and increasing threat to the function and diversity of ecosystems. Allee effects (positive density dependence) have been shown to play an important role in the establishment and spread of non-native species. Although Allee effects can be considered a bane in conservation efforts, they can be a benefit in attempts to manage non-native species. Many biological in...

Invited Review SPECIAL ISSUE: The Role of Below-Ground Processes in Mediating Plant Invasions Above–belowground interactions govern the course and impact of biological invasions

Introduction of exotic organisms that subsequently become invasive is considered a serious threat to global biodiversity, and both scientists and nature-conservationists attempt to find explanations and means to meet this challenge. This requires a thorough analysis of the invasion phenomenon in an evolutionary and ecological context; in the case of invasive plants, we must have a major focus o...
